The principle: move load into sunlight

Once you have solar, every kilowatt-hour of consumption has two possible prices: nearly free (covered by your generation) or full retail (drawn from the grid). Same appliance, same duration - the only difference is when it ran. Energy management at home is simply the discipline of pushing as much consumption as possible into the free window.

The gap between a household that does this and an identical one that doesn't is routinely hundreds of dollars a year, on the same hardware.

The hierarchy, cheapest first

Habits (free): dishwasher, washing machine and dryer on delay timers into midday; pool pump rescheduled into daylight; EV charging shifted per our EV articles. Ten minutes of timer-setting captures most of the value.

Hot water (the sleeper): your tank is a thermal battery. A simple timer or smart controller heating water at noon instead of overnight redirects one of the home's largest loads into the free window; a solar diverter goes further, trickling only your actual surplus into the element. Automation (set and forget): smart plugs and native appliance scheduling make the habits permanent. Some hybrid inverter platforms can trigger loads on export thresholds - 'when exporting over 2 kW, run X'.

Storage (the capstone): a battery automates the entire principle at whole-home scale, banking the surplus you couldn't schedule around. It's deliberately last: every kilowatt-hour you shift by timing is a kilowatt-hour of battery you don't need to buy, so good management actually shrinks the battery you should purchase.
