The federal battery rebate, explained for NSW households

What it is

The federal battery rebate is a discount on the upfront cost of installing home battery storage. It works through the same certificate mechanism as the long-standing solar rebate - meaning it's applied by your installer as a reduction to your price, rather than being something you claim back afterwards.

This is the most common misunderstanding we correct. You should not be paying full price and waiting for a cheque. A compliant retailer calculates the incentive and shows it as a deduction on your quote.

Who and what qualifies

Broadly: approved batteries installed by accredited installers, with the incentive applying to the first 50 kWh of capacity only - larger systems can be installed, but capacity above 50 kWh attracts no rebate. It applies to new solar-plus-battery installations and to batteries added to existing solar systems.

The product and installer requirements matter. A battery that isn't on the approved list doesn't attract the incentive regardless of its quality, and an installation by a non-accredited installer doesn't either.

Why timing matters

The incentive steps down at regular intervals - the amount available per kilowatt-hour reduces over time by design, as the policy is intended to accelerate early adoption rather than subsidise indefinitely.

We're careful about how we put this, because rebate urgency is one of the most abused pressure tactics in this industry. The honest version: if you were already planning to install, earlier is worth more than later. If you weren't, a step-down is not a reason to buy something that doesn't suit your property. The rebate improves a good decision; it doesn't rescue a bad one.

Stacking with other incentives

The battery rebate can generally be combined with the solar rebate (STCs) on the solar portion of a combined system. In NSW, VPP participation may also be available alongside it, though program terms vary and should be assessed separately.

Because these interact and because values change, the only reliable figure is one calculated against current values at the time of your quote - which is why we show the rebate as a line item with the working, rather than a headline discount.
