Monitoring: how you know your system is actually working

The silent failure problem

A solar system with a failed string, a faulty optimiser, a tripped isolator or a degraded panel doesn't announce itself. There's no noise, no warning light in the kitchen. It simply generates less. Most owners discover it, if at all, months later when a bill seems higher than expected - and by then the loss is unrecoverable.

This is the single strongest argument for real monitoring: not curiosity, but early fault detection.

Expected versus actual

Basic inverter monitoring tells you what your system produced. That's necessary but insufficient - because without knowing what it should have produced given the actual weather and season, a number on its own means nothing. A 20 kWh day might be excellent in July and poor in January.

Proper monitoring compares actual generation against modelled expected generation for your specific system, location and conditions. Deviation triggers an alert. That's the difference between data and information.

Consumption monitoring

Generation monitoring alone tells half the story. Adding consumption metering shows what you're using, when, and therefore how much of your generation you're actually self-consuming versus exporting.

This is what lets you act - shifting a pool pump or an EV charge into daylight hours, sizing a future battery correctly, or spotting that a hot water system is running at the wrong time. It's also how you verify whether the savings assumptions in your original quote were honest.

What aftercare should include

Fault detection and diagnosis. Warranty claims handled on your behalf rather than left to you to negotiate with a manufacturer. Advice on retailer plans once your usage profile has changed. And an annual inspection - panels are largely self-cleaning in rain, but the inverter, wiring and mounting benefit from a professional look.

The installation is the midpoint of the relationship, not the end of it. A system that runs unmonitored for twenty years will not deliver what it promised.
