Why efficiency comes first
Every kilowatt-hour you stop needing is worth more than one you generate: it's saved at full retail rates, works at night, needs no roof space, and never degrades. The engineering order for any home is: shrink the load, shift the load, then generate for what remains. Skipping straight to generation means buying a bigger system to feed avoidable waste.
This is also self-interested honesty on our part - an efficient home needs a smaller, better-fitted system, and a right-sized system performs better on every metric we're later judged on.
The big four, in order of typical impact
Heating and cooling dominate most bills. The cheap wins are sealing and insulation - draught-proofing doors and windows, topping up ceiling insulation - because every degree of leakage is paid for hourly. Running reverse-cycle air conditioning for heating beats resistive heaters several times over for the same warmth.

Refrigeration runs 24/7, so an old second fridge in the garage is often a $150-plus annual habit; age and star ratings genuinely matter here.
Standby and lighting: LEDs by attrition if not already done, and smart plugs to kill the entertainment stack overnight. Individually small, collectively real.
Efficiency changes your solar design
This isn't a separate topic from solar - it's an input to it. A home that trims 8 kWh of daily waste needs meaningfully less array and battery to hit the same self-sufficiency, which is why our design conversation asks about your appliances and habits, not just your bill total. Sometimes the honest recommendation is 'fix the hot water and the draughts, then buy the smaller system' - and we'd rather tell you that than sell the extra panels.
