How to read this page

Incentive values change on published schedules, so this page explains each scheme's mechanics and current shape rather than quoting figures that will silently go stale - and every quote we issue shows the exact values current on the day, with the working. The headline: a NSW household installing solar plus a battery in 2026 can stack multiple incentives, all applied upfront by the installer rather than claimed back afterwards.

Solar: the STC discount

The long-running 'solar rebate' - Small-scale Technology Certificates - discounts every solar system up to 100 kW, calculated from your system size, your postcode's zone and the year. It's applied to your price upfront, and it declines each January as the scheme's deeming period shortens toward its 2030 end. On a typical residential system it remains a four-figure reduction; on commercial systems under 100 kW, five figures. Full mechanics in our STC article.

Nothing to apply for on your end - a compliant retailer handles it and must show it as a line item with the certificate count.

Batteries: the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate

The current headline incentive: a substantial upfront discount on approved home batteries, applying to the first 50 kWh of capacity, for new combined systems and retrofits alike. It stacks with STCs on a combined solar-plus-battery installation: STCs discount the solar portion, the battery rebate discounts the storage.

VPP participation: the NSW incentive

NSW separately offers an incentive for connecting an eligible battery to a Virtual Power Plant under its energy savings schemes - on top of whatever the VPP program itself pays you in ongoing credits or rates. Values vary by battery and program, and VPP terms vary enormously, so this one deserves the scrutiny our VPP article walks through: the battery must stack up on its own first, with VPP income as upside.

This can sit on top of both incentives above - the full stack on one system.

The adjacent one: hot water

Not solar, but frequently the best-value item on the whole list: heat pump hot water attracts its own incentives under energy savings schemes, and pairing one with solar-hour heating collapses one of the home's largest loads. One honest closing note: rebate deadlines are schedules, not sales tactics. Step-downs are real and mechanical; 'ends midnight Friday' urgency is not.
