Reframe the problem
A battery solves one specific problem: your solar generates at midday and you consume in the evening, so surplus gets exported for cents and bought back for ten times that. If a battery isn't available to you - upfront cost, renting, strata, or the arithmetic just doesn't clear yet - the underlying problem is still very attackable. You attack it from the other side: instead of moving the energy to the evening, move the evening into the energy.
Households that do this well routinely self-consume at rates that make their neighbours' batteries look underworked.
Load shifting: the free battery
Every appliance moved into your generation window converts a cents-per-kWh export into a full-retail-rate saving. Delay-start the dishwasher and washing machine to midday. Reschedule the pool pump into daylight - it's often the largest single shiftable load in the house. Charge devices, run the dryer, and pre-cool or pre-heat the house with the air conditioner in the late afternoon while the panels are still producing, so the evening starts from a comfortable baseline.
Our smart-management article ranks the full hierarchy; the point here is that timers and habits capture a large slice of what a battery would have captured, for zero dollars.
Hot water: the thermal battery you already own
Your hot water tank stores energy as heat just as effectively as lithium stores it as chemistry - and you already paid for it. A timer or smart controller heating water at solar noon instead of overnight redirects one of the home's largest loads into your free window. A solar diverter goes further, trickling only your live surplus into the element, and a heat pump unit compounds the whole equation.
For many battery-less solar homes, fixing hot water timing alone recovers a third of what a battery would have delivered.
Get paid properly for what you still export
You'll still export - so stop treating the feed-in tariff as fixed. Rates vary meaningfully between retailers, and the right comparison (WattEver handles solar plans well; Energy Made Easy is the neutral baseline) weighs your feed-in rate against usage rates on your actual figures, not the headline. Re-shop after commissioning and annually: a solar household on a pre-solar plan is the most common money leak we see.
Time-of-use plans deserve a look too - with your daytime draw near zero and flexible loads shifted, TOU's cheap windows can suit a disciplined solar home even without storage.
Keep the battery door open
Not now doesn't mean never: the rebate schedule, falling prices, or a change of home can flip the arithmetic. Two cheap preparations - consumption monitoring, so the sizing data is already collected when the day comes, and, at install time, a hybrid-capable inverter, which turns the future battery into an add-on rather than a rebuild. When your surplus data shows a battery would actually cycle daily, our sizing article and the design tool will tell you honestly whether it clears.
