The market you're actually shopping in
Type 'solar quote' into a search engine and you'll meet hundreds of vendors: established licensed companies, honest small operators, marketing outfits reselling leads, and pop-up sellers who won't exist when your warranty needs them. The paperwork looks similar; the businesses behind it are not.
Due diligence is your first filter, and it's fast: whose name is on the contract, what's their contractor licence number (check it on the NSW Fair Trading register), will SAA-accredited installers be on the roof, and are the exact products CEC-approved? Our licence article walks through why each of these matters and what you risk without them. Any vendor who hesitates on those four questions has answered them.
The product myth
The most common buying mistake in solar is treating the system as a product purchase - as though a tier-1 panel guarantees a tier-1 outcome. It doesn't. A quality panel in an under-engineered system delivers mediocrity with a good logo on it: wrong size for the load, strings laid across a shading pattern, an inverter mismatched to the tariff, exports the network won't accept.
A good product is necessary and nowhere near sufficient. Panels don't design systems, and they don't seal roof penetrations either.
Engineering is the multiplier
Between the same box of hardware and two different outcomes sits engineering: sizing against your measured usage rather than a postcode average, string design that respects your roof's actual shading, phase and export-limit decisions made before the network application instead of after a failed one, switchboard assessment before installation day instead of a 'variation' during it.
None of this is visible on a brochure, which is why cheap quotes can look identical to engineered ones on paper. It becomes visible later - on your bills, in your export approval, in whether the system does what the proposal promised. Engineering is the part of the price that pays you back.
Installation is where quality becomes physical
The best design still has to be executed on your actual roof by actual people. SAA accreditation is the floor, not the ceiling: workmanship shows up in penetration sealing, cable management, clearances done to standard rather than to schedule, and commissioning that verifies the system against its design instead of just switching it on.
Installation quality is also the layer most quickly sacrificed when a price has to hit a number - subcontracted to whoever's cheapest that week, compressed into fewer hours than the roof needs. The product warranty doesn't cover any of that; the workmanship warranty does, and it's only as durable as the company standing behind it.
What the premium actually buys
So when a properly built quote comes in above the cheapest offer, the difference isn't margin vanity. It's the engineering hours before the quote, licensed accountability you can enforce, accredited installers paid enough to do it properly, compliance done right the first time, and a whole-of-system warranty from a business structured to still exist in year ten.
Cheap quotes aren't magic - they remove exactly these invisible layers first, because they're the layers you can't see at signing. Quality comes with expertise, and expertise comes at a premium. The premium is usually a fraction of what re-doing a bad install costs.
Where we stand on price matching
We're not precious about price - we're precious about what the price contains. If you have a genuinely comparable quote - a licensed company of similar standing, SAA-accredited installers, equivalent CEC-approved products, and real engineering behind the design - bring it to us and we may be able to match it. We assess that comparison honestly, and we'll show you our reasoning either way.
What we won't do is 'match' a quote by quietly removing the engineering or installation quality from yours - that trade always ends up on your roof. If the cheaper quote wins on substance, we'll tell you that too. You can send us the quote to compare and we'll give you a straight answer.
