Why this matters to you
Standards compliance is not paperwork. Each of these standards exists because something went wrong often enough to warrant a rule. Knowing roughly what they cover lets you ask better questions - and recognise when an installation is being done properly.
AS/NZS 5033 - the solar array
Governs the design and installation of the photovoltaic array itself: string configuration, DC cabling, isolation, earthing, labelling, and fire-safety considerations. The DC side of a solar system operates at voltages that don't behave like household AC and can't simply be switched off by flipping a breaker - this standard is largely about managing that.
AS/NZS 4777 - grid connection
Governs inverters and how they connect to the grid: voltage and frequency limits, anti-islanding protection (so your system shuts down safely during a blackout rather than back-feeding into lines a worker might be repairing), and power quality requirements.
This is the standard that makes your inverter turn off in a blackout unless you have a properly configured backup circuit - a behaviour many people are surprised by until it's explained.
AS/NZS 5139 - battery installation
Governs battery energy storage: where a battery may be located, clearances required, mounting surfaces, protection from fire spread, and whether a location is habitable. What that means for your wall. This is why battery placement isn't arbitrary - typical requirements include meaningful clearances around the unit and installation against a non-combustible wall, with additional measures if installed indoors.
If someone proposes mounting a battery in a bedroom wall cavity, that's not a shortcut, it's a compliance failure.
AS/NZS 3000 - the wiring rules
The general electrical installation standard governing everything else: the switchboard, protective devices, cabling, and how the solar system integrates with your existing electrical installation. It's why a switchboard upgrade is sometimes genuinely necessary rather than an upsell - older boards may not have the capacity or protection devices to safely accommodate a new generation source.
Who's accountable
Installations must be carried out by SAA-accredited installers - registered electricians who have completed additional solar-specific training. Accreditation is checkable. Compliance documentation should be provided to you on completion, and you should keep it: it matters for warranty claims and for the sale of your property.
