The problem with the standard journey
The typical Australian solar journey runs like this: you fill in a form to 'get a quote', your details are sold or passed to several companies, the phone starts ringing, and somewhere in the third call someone quotes you a system sized off your postcode and a guess. The actual engineering - your usage, your tariff, your roof - arrives late, if at all. The inefficiency isn't just annoying; it's why so many systems end up mis-sized, and why so many people feel sold-to rather than served.
When we went looking for a tool that would let a customer design their own system transparently - real sizing logic, visible assumptions, no lead-gate before the numbers - we couldn't find one in Australia. So we built it, and we keep improving it.
What it actually does for you
The tool walks you through the same questions our engineers would ask. You can start two ways: analyse my bills - enter a recent bill and your usage habits, and it recommends the right system size and type for your home; or I already know what I want - skip the analysis and go straight to system type and package pricing. Either way it runs genuine logic: array size against your load and roof, battery capacity against your evening use, rebates at current rates.
It then shows you an indicative design with the numbers attached: system size, estimated annual and ten-year savings, payback, and the rebates applied. You even see a satellite view of your own roof as part of the process. In a few minutes you have what the traditional journey takes three phone calls and two site visits to produce.
Transparency you can actually interrogate
The single most important thing the tool does is show its working - and let you change it. The assumptions behind your estimate are visible, not buried. That matters because a quote you can interrogate is a fundamentally different object from a quote you can only accept or decline.
What sits behind those numbers is not a generic calculator: it encodes how we actually design systems - the engineering discipline, the installation experience, and the customer outcomes Zero 4 Energy has accumulated since 2019, with a team carrying more than a decade in the industry. It also keeps us honest by design. A tool that shows its numbers can't hide a lazy design behind a confident price. And because it runs the arithmetic neutrally, it will show you a modest system - or a weak battery case - exactly as readily as a large one. If solar isn't a strong investment for your property, the numbers say so, and so do we.

Prefer to talk? There's a 'request a call' path at every step that hands you to a human, with the same transparency. The tool exists to give you the option the industry usually withholds: see the numbers first, talk when you're ready.
How it fits the rest of your journey
The design tool is the front door, not the whole house. When you're ready to proceed, an engineer verifies the details a browser can't - exact roof geometry, shading, switchboard condition and your network's export limits - before anything becomes a fixed price. That's the honest boundary: the tool gives you a genuine, well-reasoned indicative design; the engineer confirms it against your actual roof.
That's also why the tool isn't a contract price and never pretends to be. Any tool that hands you a fixed figure before seeing your switchboard is a lead form in costume. Ours is built to inform you, not to trap you - and to make the whole journey faster and straighter for everyone, including us.
