The big change
Powerwall 3's defining feature is the integrated solar inverter - solar strings connect directly into the unit, so for a new install it can replace a separate inverter entirely. It offers 13.5 kWh of usable storage, continues Tesla's app-led experience, and supports whole-home backup capability.

Who it suits
The strongest fit is a new combined system where the Powerwall becomes both inverter and storage, and households who value backup: configured appropriately it can back up substantial loads, not just a few circuits.
It's a fixed 13.5 kWh block - you add whole additional units rather than small modules. For homes whose arithmetic lands at 8-10 kWh, a modular brand may fit the need (and the rebate maths) more precisely; for homes at 13 kWh or planning for an EV, the Powerwall's capacity is a feature, not a compromise.
Retrofit considerations
Adding a Powerwall 3 to an existing solar system works, but the integrated-inverter benefit changes shape - your existing inverter arrangement and the retrofit configuration need engineering review rather than assumption. This is exactly the kind of case our site check exists for.
